_{[ It's been awhile since he's had someone so eager to spend time with him.. and in exchange, it's been awhile since Sunny has been eager to spend time with someone else. Something about Kaneki made him feel like a safe person that Sunny could share his time with, and so.. he was always excited to do things with him. Kaneki was quiet and kind and would be respectful of any privacy that Sunny might want. Maybe that's why he liked him so much. ]}

We can go to the library.

_{[ Seemed like a good place to go if that is where Kaneki found the information at. Plus, Sunny liked books and knows Kaneki liked them too. ]}

Hm! That's a good idea. And afterwards, if you want, we can find a book to read together.

[ it will be nice to spend sometime together, just enjoying themselves without worrying about things, right? he smiles wider ] I will wait for you there.

_{[ Sunny doesn't say anything after that and makes his way towards the library like instructed. The second he sees that familiar (heh) form, he walks right up to Kaneki and looks up at him. ]}

Is it important? What you want to show me?

_{[ not even a hello.. ]}

[ sunny didn't have to rush or anything!

When he speaks, Kaneki lifts his head from a book he was reading, blinking ] Ah- Sunny. hello. [ kaneki will say hello!!! he also smiles wider and shakes his head ]

I'm not sure if it's important. It's just something I found. [ kaneki pats the seat next to kaneki's so he can sit down ] I was reading about this place and forms of connection between two people here, and found something that sounds interesting.

[ a pause. Kaneki realizes it might also be... well, embarrassing. Kind of. A bit?? ]

_{[ It's okay. He likes spending time with Kaneki, so rushing is okay for him. He blinks a few times when Kaneki pats the seat next to him and plops down, sinking into the chair; absorbing the warmth the other teenager gave as he sat next to him. It felt nice to be like this. It reminded him of Mari and how they would sit on the couch and read together a lot. A slow sigh exhales from his lips and he reaches over to hold part of Kaneki— his hand or his arm. Sometimes, he thinks about how he saw Kaneki act in the dreambubble and it's alarming, but anytime Kaneki is like this, it reminds him what he's been saying all along: Kaneki is Kaneki and Kaneki is a good person.

His dark eyes seem curious as he looks at the other brunette. ]}

I don't connect well with people.

_{[ Almost as if he already has a defeatist outlook on whatever Kaneki is about to share. ]}

[ kaneki smiles as he watches Sunny come closer and he offers the boy his hand to hold. He is glad despite everything, Sunny still accepts being close to Kaneki, and naturally he doesn't reject any sort of proximity. he even welcomes it. ]

I think you connected well with me. [ and kaneki is sure he has others, too. Even if it's hard for him to see that ]

I read in a book that people can adopt each other in this place. Not just as father and child, just as family. [ like two siblings, yes.

Kaneki doesn't say it outright just yet, not wanting to just dump this on Sunny if he doesn't like the idea ]

_{[ Sunny is glad that Kaneki always affirms a more positive suggestion for how he is perceived and receipted by Kaneki. There's that suffocating anxiety that haunts him at night when he is trying to sleep. Maybe I'm not good enough. Maybe Kaneki really doesn't like me.

He slowly blinks as he thinks about this and Kaneki's words, not sure how to process what is being said to him. ]}

... Adoption?

Ah- I know it probably sounds strange...! [ oh no, kaneki is worried now, he doesn't want Sunny to think he is a creep or something like that ]

It's not rare for people to be adopted into a family, in Japan. Even adults! Of course here is different since it involves magic... but- what I mean is--

If you want to be actual brothers here, it's possible. There is magic for that.

_{[ The way Sunny just stares at Kaneki with no emotion— no hint of what he might be thinking could be unsettling. There's not a look of approval or excitement, but there's also not a look of disgust or judgment. He just keeps staring as an awkward silence passes over them.

Kaneki will probably feel Sunny's grip on his hand tighten and he finally says something, looking down at his lap. ]}

I don't think I'm the right person you should have for something like this.

_{[ It doesn't say he doesn't want to, though. But he leaves his reasons for thinking this way hidden, whether he knows why he feels this way or not. ]}

Pretending you're my brother might be safer for you.

_{[ It's odd he says that; even he is a little surprised. ]}

[ Kaneki blinks. He didn't expect that answer, because it's just so... ]

... I'm not going to force you to accept, Sunny. I just want you to feel comfortable -

[ kaneki shakes his head softly ] But I'm alright. You don't need to worry about me at all, and I offered because I do think you are the right person.

But if you would rather not do that, we don't have to.

_{[ He's probably similar to Kaneki in regard he needs a little push when it comes to accepting something like this because of his low self esteem. Of course he wants to be considered a real brother to Kaneki, but something deep inside of him tells him he's not worthy of having a sibling again. Not after what happened to Mari. Not the pain he felt when he lost her. Not the pain he and his friends felt when he shut himself away from them. Somehow, he feels responsible for her death even though she was found by a noose made from a jumprope in his backyard.

The reassurance is all he needs before his chest begins to tighten as his emotions start to surface, much like when they had talked by the picnic table that day.

Kaneki wants this kind of relationship with him and even though they had established a familial bond already, this next step is a little overwhelming. He thought Kaneki would have lost interest in him by now. His voice is quiet, his voice cracking just slightly: ]}

... I want to.

_{[ A pause. ]}

More than anything... if you are certain.

[ They are very similar in a way. Which means Kaneki gets Sunny and his fears easily - he feels them as well. Now, Ken never had an actual sibling, but somehow he always feels that he might not be worth of the people he loves.

He gently squeezes Sunny's hand, before he leans over a little, so he can look back at the other boy ]

I am. If you are too. I don't want to disappoint you either, Sunny.

[ he wants to be the best brother he can be, for him ]

I hope I can make you happy.

_{[ Because he feels like that is the role of the younger sibling. He made Mari happy so many times. They shared so many things together. Hugs. Cuddling. They played instruments together. He was always there to listen to her when she had problems and comfort her when she needed it.

And just like that, she left Earth and nobody still knows why. She left no clues. No indication for why she did it. ]}

... And I hope you can protect me without me being too much of a hindrance to you.

_{[ Because to Sunny, that's what the older sibling did. Mari saved him from drowning. She took care of him when he needed protection. She was always there until.. she suddenly wasn't. Maybe if he hadn't been so much trouble, she wouldn't have committed suicide. Sunny still doesn't know. ]}

_{[ His voice drops as he breaks his hand away from Ken's and brings both of them to his face, red spreading to his ears. ]}

I love you very much, Ken-niichan. Thank you for accepting me.

_{[ An older sibling. He has one again. ]}

You aren't a hindrance, Sunny. I'm very happy I've met you. [ Ken smiles wide and he reaches for Sunny's head, to gently stroke his hair with a big smile, even if Sunny feels embarrassed ]

I love you too, Sunny. And- you know you can reach out to me anytime, alright? And visit, any time. [ Dirk would be fine with it, Kaneki knows.

he gently bumps his head against Sunny's ] I never had a little brother, so I will do my best for you, I promise.

_{[ He remains flustered as his head is caressed and he finally peers at Kaneki shyly. ]}

You.. haven't. That's right. I remember you saying that.

_{[ He bites his lip at that. He wants to stay with Kaneki as much as he can, but he doesn't want to be a burden. Despite Kaneki telling him he's not a hindrance, Something makes him believe that. Something tells him that in an eerie voice when he's trying to sleep. Instead, he changes the subject: ]}

How.. do we make this kind of magic happen?

[ kaneki pulls his hand away gently and nods.

Right, right. He reaches for a book, to flip through it until it lands on the page he wants to show Sunny ]

From what I've read - we put our spoons together with items we find comfort in. Like... a blanket. By accepting to be a family, your chosen item will make you feel safe from then on, by touching it when you are sad, anxious or lost.

_{[ What an interesting concept. Sunny is certain he has never heard of anything like this, but he supposes that is the perk of being in a magical world such as this. His dark eyes show a lot of interest at what Kaneki is saying and.. it looks like he is.. smiling. Yes, he's smiling. ]}

_{[ Groundbreaking cause, yes, he is almost always anxious and afraid. ]}

[ kaneki nods softly ]

And the same with me. The items we choose will bring us some relief in difficult situations.

[ he smiles wider, mostly because of Sunny's own smile ] Do you want to try it, then?

_{[ --Don't know what to say, really. All this time in his tree house by himself, when he's alone with this thoughts and he feels the most afraid and anxious, he spends so much time in self deprecation and he's still not entirely sure why. Yes, Mari committed suicide, but maybe he felt like he was responsible somehow.

Somehow.

And here is someone who finds him a person worthy of close companionship. A family bond. His family was barely holding itself together ever since Mari left them.

Instead of using words, Sunny feels his face grow warm and he looks up at Kaneki with what appears to be the biggest smile he's made in awhile. In four years perhaps.

Then he nods.

Finally he says something after a moment of silence: ]}

... It won't hurt, right?

[ kaneki can't help but to smile back when Sunny does, matching his smile. It's good to see him smile like he means it, finally, a genuinely big one like a child should smile.

He ruffles SUnny's head a little, messing up his hair but that's fine-

He shakes his head softly ]

It won't. We just need to find two items we want to use.

A knife.

_{[ Why is that the first thing he suggests. In fact, Sunny pulls it out and looks at it, eyes focusing on his reflection in it. The blade looks a little dull as if it has been used some. ]}

[ Sunny NO ]

Ah--- I was thinking something more... comforting. That you can hug and have next to you without getting hurt. [ or losing any fingers ]

Like a sweater, or a blanket or... a toy.
